Fight Infection. Fight Heart Disease.

Researchers continue to find evidence that chronic infections can lead to various forms of heart disease. Several different strains of bacteria and fungus that cause infections throughout the body have been linked to this life-threatening disease. These bacteria (e.g. Staphylococcus and Streptococcus) or fungi (e.g. Candida and Aspergillus) circulate in the bloodstream and over time they can damage heart muscle tissue. This can lead to inflammation, hardening of arteries, decreased valve function and other heart complications.

In order to prevent chronic infection from these pathogens AND heart disease we will need to make sure our immune systems are performing at their best. To boost our body’s ability to fight off bacterial and fungal infections, it is imperative that we quit smoking, reduce our alcohol consumption, exercise regularly and eat a diet of nutrient-rich foods. Good dental care and oral hygiene are also great ways to ensure that bacteria and fungus do not enter our bodies through our mouths. And of course, any sign of infection should be treated immediately in order to assist eliminating pathogens that contribute to heart disease.
