Just How Important is Vitamin D?

Vitamin D is one of those nutrients that we all know we should be getting enough of, but few of us really know why! In the simplest of terms, Vitamin D is a precursor hormone which is produced by our bodies via cholesterol as well as being absorbed from exposure to the sun. It is fat-soluble and can be found in a variety of foods, most commonly eggs and milk.

Vitamin D is one of the most important building blocks that our bodies require for the production of adrenal and sex hormones. It is also a vital part of the regulation of many other bodily functions. For example, it has long been considered an essential part of bone growth and also of the body’ calcium absorption process. In the most recent research, Vitamin D has also been identified as having a large role in the immune system, the regulation of body weight, maintaining a balanced hormone level in the body and even in regulating our moods and behaviors. It has also been established that as we age, our bodies begin to produce much less Vitamin D.

If you are experiencing muscular pains, mood swings, sleeping difficulties, general fatigue or hormone imbalance, you may find that taking Vitamin D supplements can be very helpful. Your doctor should be able to perform a simple test in order to determine whether or not you do have a Vitamin D deficiency as well as recommending treatment for the symptoms caused by it.
